How LifeStraw Community Works:
- 5 liters of untreated water is poured into the top of the unit, also called the dirty water container.
- The pre-filter removes coarse particles larger than 80 microns.
- The ultrafiltration hollow-fibre membrane cartridge, located inside the main dark blue body of the filter, then stops all turbidity particles and pathogens larger than 20 nanometers (including all bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts). Particles and microbes larger than 20 nanometers stay on the dirty side of the membrane and clean/purified water passes through the membrane.
- Purified water can be collected from any of the four taps.
- The blue tap is turned to release purified water.
- The backwashing handle allows semi-automatic backwashing; when it is pulled down and released, pathogens and dust particles on the dirty side of the membrane are lifted by back pressure and then flushed out into the red backwash container.

Vegetation Still Kit for Water Collection
The Vegetation Still Kit is a water collection and purification kit designed to be used in survival situations where primary sources of water are difficult to find, or in conjunction with other water collection and purification techniques. The kit relies on a well known technique whereby the water contained in plant material is released through thermal action generated by containment in a plastic bag and exposure to sunlight. The concept is to set up several stills in a given area to maximize the potential to collect enough potable water for survival. The water collected in this manner is purified by the action of the still. However, it is important to be sure that only non-poisonous plant material is contained in the bags.

WhirlPak 1 Liter Stand Up Bags – 3 Pack
The Whirl-Pak Stand-Up Sterile Polyethylene Bag: these great bags roll up very tightly, and are individually sterilized and sealed. The 1 liter capacity of these bags make them great for using to purify water (using chlorine dioxide tablets, for example, which are usually able to purify one liter of water). Chlorine dioxide, a well established disinfectant is the active ingredient in Aquamira® Water Treatment. Chlorine dioxide is iodine and chlorine free. The unique formula works by releasing nascent oxygen, a highly active form of oxygen, which is a strong oxidant and a powerful germicidal agent. Chlorine dioxide has been used by municipal water treatment plants to kill a variety of waterborne pathogens since the late 1940s. Unlike free chlorine (familiar as household bleach) or other halogen chemicals (such as iodine), chlorine dioxide does not create potentially harmful by-products.

Aquamira’s key benefits are clearly evident when compared to other common portable water treatment chemicals such as iodine or sodium hypochlorite (household bleach).
