However, we recommend a three-tiered approach to water purification: filter, chemical, boil. You don’t need to do all three, but you should have the capability to do all three at any given time. If the filter gets lost or broken, you have the tablets. If the tablets get used up, have the capacity to boil by carrying a small, natural tinder stove platform and metal vessel. Using redundant approaches to survival tasks is a great way to plan your kit and keep you healthy.

    How to use:
    The patented LifeStraw is a small tube with specialized filters inside. Place one end in unfiltered water (a glass, water bottle, river, or puddle!), and suck the resulting clean water up through the top. Anyone who can use a drinking straw can easily use a LifeStraw.

    Before use, uncap the LifeStraw and hold it upright in water for a minute. This allows the water to creep up the filter membrane. Then do five quick sucks and the water will flow easily. When drinking from muddy water, you may have to blow back down into it to purge out the turbidity if the flow slows or stops.

    How LifeStraw Community Works:

    • 5 liters of untreated water is poured into the top of the unit, also called the dirty water container.
    • The pre-filter removes coarse particles larger than 80 microns.
